Upper Navua River Rafting Trip

When Mike got here, I decided to treat us to a day on the river.

The Upper Navua River, Fiji's Grand Canyon.

It was cold and cloudy and I shivered the entire day.  Even with that, it was beautiful. Deep gorges, lush surrounding forest.  The water level was very low - it's usually up the walls to where you see the green plants growing.  It made for gorgeous viewing, but we had to chug our way over some of the rapids.  Our guides were men from a local village in the mountains. The chief of the village has granted permission to this one river company to run trips.  In return River Fiji maintains a high level of commitment to protecting the mountain areas and river habitat.  Our guides expressed great pride and thankfulness for the river.  And a sweet sense of belonging.
